Q:
What kind of organizations should register as a society?
A:
Except those organizations have been register under other Ordinances, such as registered under the Companies Ordinance (Cap.622), any organization (e.g. club, association, committee) established in Hong Kong should register as a society under the Societies Ordinance within 1 month from the date of established.

Q:
What do I need to prepare for the society application?
A:
To apply societies, you will need to provide the followings:
  1. A completed application form;
  2. Copies of HKID cards or other valid identity documents;
  3. Document to prove the place of business of the society;
  4. Consent letter with clear copy of HKID card or other valid identity document from the lawful occupier of the premises (if applicable);
  5. Constitution, articles of association or minutes of a meeting, to establish the society and show the objects and purposes of the society;
  6. Relevant qualification of the office bearers (e.g. certificates, if any); and
  7. Consent letter for the name of the society (if applicable).

Q:
Is there any exception that could apply exemption for societies register?
A:
A society or a branch may apply for exemption from registration. A certificate of exemption will be issued if the Societies Officer is satisfied that the society or the branch is established solely for religious, charitable, social or recreational purposes or as a rural committee or a federation or other association of rural committees.

Q:
How should I apply for exemption of societies register?
A: The exemption application procedure is same as the normal society procedure. A local society shall apply in the specified form to the Societies Officer for registration or exemption from registration within 1 month of its establishment.

Q:
What is the consequence if an organization failure to comply the Societies Ordinance (Cap. 151)?
A: Failure to comply with instructions to provide information or to provide false or incomplete information is liable to a fine of HK$25,000, no imprisonment penalty.

Q:
Can the public obtain the list of registered societies or exempted societies?
A:
Public can visit The Hong Kong Police website (click here) or Police Licensing Office in person during office hours to obtain the list of registered societies or exempted societies.
