  1. Taiwan VISA Overview

    Taiwan offers various types of visas to foreigners, depending on the purpose of their visit. This summary provides an introduction to these different visas.

    (1)
    Visitor VISA

    The eligibility of application
    A visitor visa is a short-term visa of up to 6 months. It is available to those with a valid passport or travel document for purposes like transit, tourism, family visits, business, study, employment, religious activities, or other approved activities.

    The validity of Visitor VISA
    The validity of the visitor visa ranges from 3 months to 1 year, depending on the foreigner's nationality. For countries with reciprocal agreements, it can be valid for up to 5 years. The visa can be issued as single-entry or multiple-entry.

    Duration of stay
    The stay duration is between 14 to 90 days. If the visa allows a stay of 60 or 90 days and does not indicate "no extension," it can be extended to a maximum of 180 days.

    Resident VISA

    The eligibility of application
    The resident visa is for long-term stays of more than 6 months. It applies to those with a valid passport for purposes such as family reunion, study, employment, investment, religious activities, government service, international exchange, or other approved activities.

    The validity of Resident VISA
    The resident visa is usually valid for 3 months.

    Duration of stay
    Resident visa holders must apply for an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) within 30 days of arrival. The ARC holders may stay in Taiwan within the issued duration of ARC's validity.

    VISA-exempt Entry

    Taiwan BOCA department offers residents from over 60 countries, including the USA, Canada, the UK, Japan, and Singapore, are eligible for visa-exempt entry. The full list of visa-exemption countries is as below (information states from August 2024):

    • Nationals of the following countries are eligible for the visa exemption program, with a duration of stay of up to 90 days:
      Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Eswatini*, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan*, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Marshall Island*, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia*(effective till March 31, 2025), Norway, Palau, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tuvalu*, the United Kingdom, the United States of America*, and Vatican City State.

    • Nationals of the following countries are eligible for the visa exemption program, with a duration of stay of up to 30 days:
      Belize*, Malaysia, Nauru, St. Kitts and Nevis*, Saint Lucia*, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Singapore.

    • Nationals of the following countries are eligible for the visa exemption program, with a duration of stay of up to 14 days (only effective till July 31, 2025):
      The kingdom of Thailand, Brunei and Philippines.

    Landing VISA

    The eligibility of application
    Available to residents of visa-exemption countries (except the USA) with emergency or temporary passports valid for more than 6 months, and holders of Turkish passport with remaining validity of more than 6 months. A return or onward ticket is required.

    The validity of Landing VISA
    Landing visas are single-entry and cannot be extended, except in cases of severe illness or force majeure etc.

    Duration of stay
    The stay is limited to 30 days start from the day after arrival.

    Diplomatic VISA

    The eligibility of application
    Holders of diplomatic or official passports can apply for a diplomatic visa. Some countries' passport holders may enter by visa-exemption. The full list is as below (information states from August 2024):
    Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Belize, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Eswatini*, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan*, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Marshall Island*, Monaco, Nauru, Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Palau, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tuvalu, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Vatican City State.

    The validity of Diplomatic VISA
    The diplomatic visa is valid for up to 5 years.

    Duration of stay
    The stay duration depends on the purpose of the visit. If there is no specific stay period on the diplomatic visa, there is no set time by which the holder must leave. However, the visa holder is not allowed to engage in activities beyond the diplomatic purpose. In general, for visa-exempt diplomats, the stay is usually 90 days, except for Singapore and Malaysia, where it is 30 days.

    Courtesy Visa

    The eligibility of application
    Courtesy visas are issued to eligible individuals such as former heads of state, government ministers, diplomats, or individuals invited by Taiwan's government.

    The validity of Courtesy VISA
    The Courtesy visa is valid for up to 5 years.

    Duration of stay
    The stay duration depends on the purpose of the visit. If there is no specific stay period on the diplomatic visa, there is no set time by which the holder must leave. However, the visa holder is not allowed to engage in activities beyond the diplomatic purpose.

  2. Entry and Related Regulations

    The entry validity is the period within which the visa must be used to enter Taiwan, as indicated on the visa. The stay duration starts from the day after arrival in Taiwan. Visa holders must only engage in activities consistent with the purpose of their visa, as noted in the visa's "remarks" section.
