China Adjusts Visa Policy for Foreigners

Recently, Chinese embassies in the United States, Canada, Singapore, Australia, the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Germany, Russia, the Republic of Korea and other countries have released notices on their official websites respectively, announcing the adjustments to the visa policy for foreigners going to China. The main changes are as follows:

  1. Exemption of Invitation Letter for Work Visa

Those who have been approved by the Chinese domestic competent authorities to work in China are no longer required to submit a visa invitation letter (PU letter) issued by the relevant Chinese foreign affairs department when applying for a work visa. The applicant can apply for a work visa (Z visa) with a valid Notification Letter of Foreigner's Work Permit or Foreigner’s Work Permit.

  2. Exemption of Invitation Letter for Family Members

Foreign family members of those who have been approved to work in China (including foreigners who have already worked in China), including the spouse, parents, children under the age of 18, parents of spouses, are no longer required to submit a visa invitation letter (PU letter) issued by the relevant Chinese foreign affairs department when applying to live or visit relatives in China. The applicant can apply for a visa with the proof of family relationship.

  3. Expansion of Scope of Applicants Going to China for Humanitarian Reasons

In addition to the current reason for funeral, visiting relatives who are critically ill, etc., foreign family members (including spouses, parents, spouse's parents, children and their spouses, brothers and sisters, grandparents, and grandchildren) of Chinese citizens or foreign nationals with permanent residence status in China can apply for a corresponding type of visa to go to China for reunion or visiting relatives.

You are recommended to confirm with the local Chinese embassy or consulate to know whether you are subject to the above policy adjustment.
