Question

Claiming Both Old-Age and Disability Pensions

Answer
Q: How does the Bureau of Labor Insurance know whether I am receiving social welfare benefits?
A: The Bureau of Labor Insurance conducts monthly data comparisons with information provided by various agencies. If it is found that you are receiving other social welfare benefits at the same time, your old-age pension benefits will be calculated and issued based on Method B.

Q: Can a person under the age of 65 who is receiving disability pension benefits participate in the National Pension Insurance program?
A: Yes. During the period of receiving disability benefits, the individual can still participate in the National Pension Insurance program and is entitled to a full premium subsidy.

Q: If a person is already receiving disability pension benefits, can they switch to receiving old-age pension benefits upon reaching the age of 65?
A: Yes, they can.

Q: Is the service period used to calculate old-age pension benefits the same as the one used for calculating disability pension benefits?
A: No. If you choose to switch to old-age pension benefits at the age of 65, the benefit amount will be calculated based on the total number of years you were enrolled in the National Pension Insurance up to age 65. The service period differs from the one originally used to calculate your disability pension benefits.

Q: If a person is already receiving old-age pension benefits and later obtains a certificate of severe or profound disability and is assessed as having no work capacity, can they switch to receiving disability pension benefits instead?
A: No. After the age of 65, individuals are no longer insured under the National Pension Insurance and therefore do not meet the eligibility criteria for disability pension benefits. They can only continue to receive old-age pension benefits.
