Q:
What documents are required to apply for a funeral grant in Taiwan?
A:
  1. Application form for the funeral grant and the grant receipt.
  2. Death certificate, prosecutor’s autopsy certificate, or death declaration judgement.
  3. A photocopy of the household registration book containing the death registration, and a photocopy of the insured person’s ID card or household registration book.

Q:
Can foreign workers’ families claim funeral allowance for family deaths in Taiwan? What documents should be prepared?
A:
1.
According to the regulations of the Labor Insurance Bureau, foreign worker enrolled in labor insurance, whose parents, spouses, or children have passes away, may apply for a funeral allowance for family deaths.
2.
Foreign worker must fill out an application form and attach a death certificate, proof of kinship, and photocopies of the passport and residence permit.
3.
The documents attached, if issued outside of Taiwan government agencies, must be authenticated by the following units:

(a)
If created abroad, it should be authenticated by Taiwan’s embassies, consulates, representative offices, or other institutions authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; if created within Taiwan by foreign embassies or consulates in Taiwan or authorized institutions, it should be re-examined by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
(b)
If created in the China region, it should be notarized by a Chinese notary office and verified by the Straits Exchange Foundation of Taiwan.
(c)
If created in Hong Kong or Macao, it should be authenticated by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Hong Kong or Macao.
(d)
If the attached document are in a foreign language, it should be accompanied by a Chinese translation certified by the units listed above, a court, or a Taiwanese notary public (death certificates and proof of kinship documents in English sufficient for identification may be exempted from providing a Chinese translation).


Q:
Are there any insurance seniority restrictions for insured persons in Taiwan claiming funeral allowances for the death of parents, spouses, or children?
A:
There are no insurance seniority restrictions for insured persons to claim funeral allowances for the death of parents, spouses, or children once the insurance takes effect. They may claim the funeral allowance according to the regulations as soon as the insured event occurs.

Q:
If two brothers are both enrolled in Taiwan’s labor insurance and their parents pass away, can both claim the family death funeral allowance separately?
A: According to the principles of social insurance in Taiwan, for the same incident, compensation is limited to a one-time disbursement. The Labor Insurance Bureau also stipulates that the same type of insurance payment cannot be claimed repeatedly for the same incident. Therefore, even if both brothers are enrolled in labor insurance, only one of them can claim the funeral allowance.

Q:
How is the funeral allowance claimed in Taiwan when there are more than two applicants? What does the Labor Insurance Bureau do if an agreement cannot be reached?
A: Before the Labor Insurance Bureau decides, another application for the funeral allowance is submitted, the Labor Insurance Bureau will notify the applicants in writing to reach an agreement within 30 days. If an agreement cannot be reached, the funeral allowance, calculated at the highest amount among the claims, will be distributed evenly among the applicants.
