During the COVID-19 epidemic, on 8 April 2020, the Hong Kong Government announced a HK$80 billion Employment Support Scheme (ESS) to provide wage subsidies to eligible employers to retain their employees in return for employers undertaking not to implement redundancy.

Employers making MPF contributions will be eligible. The Government subsidies are calculated on the basis of 50% of wages, subject to a wage subsidy cap of HK$9,000 per employee per month for a period of six months. However, the employers have to promise that there will be no redundancies.

Payment will be made to employers in two tranches. The Government plans the first payout should be made no late than Jun 2020. The ESS application method will be further announced later.
